At PLUS, safety isn't a policy—it's our foundation. We’ve built a multi-layered support system to ensure that all participants feel secure from arrival to departure.
Safer Recruitment: Every staff member undergoes rigorous background checks and safeguarding training before they ever meet a student.
Professional Training: Our team receives detailed training, including safeguarding appropriate to their level of responsibility, to ensure they are equipped to provide adequate care for our students.
Our Staff: Dedicated staff carry out risk assessments and provide direct support to Group Leaders and students in the event of any incident. They oversee safeguarding on site, respond promptly to concerns, and offer clear guidance to both staff and students.
Arrival Briefing: On arrival, all students participate in a detailed welcome presentation where they are told about essential safety procedures, safeguarding rules, and anti-bullying policies. This session includes introductions to our safeguarding staff, information on evacuation procedures, assembly points, and emergency contact numbers.
Night Security: To ensure the safety of our students, we enforce strict curfew times at all our campuses. Our staff carry out night checks every day to verify that all students are safely in their rooms by the designated time. These measures allow us to ensure that all participants have plenty of rest for the next day's activities.
Smart IDs: Every student wears a lanyard with their personal information and emergency contact details—essential for off-campus safety.
Excursion Supervision: During excursions, Group Leaders and Activity Leaders work together to supervise students effectively. Active supervision with "Front and Back" positioning by Activity Leaders to ensure no student is left behind.
Headcounts: Continuous checks at every transition point—boarding, meeting points, and attraction entries.
How supervision works: Supervision is provided through Group Leaders, PLUS staff presence, scheduled activities, curfews, headcounts, campus rules and risk-assessed free-time arrangements. Group Leaders are primarily responsible for supervising their students, but our staff provide additional support. Group Leaders receive clear guidance in our Group Leader handbook about their supervision responsibilities. Clear walking routes between accommodation and classrooms are established during the welcome tour, so the Group Leaders can then accompany and lead their students each day. PLUS staff remain available and actively involved throughout the programme, monitoring the groups and providing support whenever further assistance is needed.
During the programme: During lessons, students are supervised by teachers and academic staff. Outside lessons and on campus, Group Leaders are responsible for supervising their students, while PLUS staff provide welfare support, monitoring and programme structure.
Moving around campus: Students aged 13 and below are supervised by their Group Leaders when moving between accommodation, classrooms, dining areas and activity meeting points. Students aged 14 and above may move independently within defined campus areas once they have been briefed on routes, safety procedures and meeting points.
Clear rules: Boundaries and curfews are set on arrival, supported by site-specific risk assessments. Group Leaders remain responsible for their students outside scheduled lessons and activities.
Under 14s: Must remain within sight of a Group Leader at all times.
14 and Over: May have limited free time during excursions (groups of 3+, within 5 min walking distance, with mobile contact) only if authorised by both PLUS and Group Leaders.
